San Diego surprised us, not knowing a lot about it apart from the Zoo and Seaworld. It
is a beautiful city; scenic, sunny and interesting. Only a few miles from the border with
Mexico, it has a thriving "Old Town", beautiful bays and harbours and a very
civilised downtown.
Places to Visit:
San Diego Zoo
Take a whole day here, it is worth it. The place is vast and it is a ruch to get round
any quicker. Do the cable-car ride and ensure that you see the hippos.
Seaworld
As well as the Killer Whale and Dolphin shows, there are many other enjoyable
showpieces. Visit the aquarium, flamingoes and the above mentioned shows.
La Jolla
Pronounced La Hoya, this stunning coastal town is just slighly north of San Diego along
the coast past Mission Bay. Visit the Cove, shown below. The rock formation (sandstone
possibly?), seals and stunning sunsets are worth the trip to California alone.
Coronado
A peninsula in San Diego Bay, this is a beautiful, affluent suburb of Sna Diego, with
the Hotel Del Coronado, where the classic "Some Like it Hot" was filmed. Amazing
architecture.
Horton Plaza
This multi-coloured shopping mall is an unusual sight, but is worth a visit. It has a
good selection of stores, easy parking and plenty of coffee shops.
Old Town
The Old Town is where the Mexican/early American architecture is visible. Built mainly
around the 19th Century it has some good tourist shops and restaurants.
